LIFT was started in the late 1970's as an off-shoot of a local RC club who flew RC gas powered model aircraft. The founder of LIFT (Little Finger Thermaleers) was Walt Fricke who not only found the club but also established the field we still fly on in Leelanau County. Our 40 acre flying field is rented from a local farmer and is located between Lake Ann, MI and Maple City, MI on County Rd 667, just south of M-72 West. Today there is ample room to fly and the lift generated from the surrounding area is frequent and produces flights that can be literally out-of-site. LIFT consists of more than 25 members who range in age from teens to others in their 70's. Some of our members are "Fun Fliers" who simply enjoy flying their aircraft on a sunny afternoon while other members actively compete in local, state, national, and international contests. Among our members we have five Level V LSF members which is the highest level of competency as designated by the League of Silent Flight who certifies achievement. No matter what an individuals flying skills, all enjoy getting together and flying sailplanes and electric powered aircraft for the pure enjoyment of it. During the winter months, members are usually involved in the construction of new aircraft, rebuilding a previous years model, and/or attending monthly club meetings held the second Tuesday of the month from October through April. Meetings are held in a conference room at Munson Medical Center, Traverse City, MI. The types of aircraft flown range from traditionally built aircraft made from balsa and spruce and purchased in a kit to "Almost Ready to Fly" aircraft that come 70 - 90 percent constructed. Some build and fly more advanced aircraft that have multiple functions and are controlled by computerized radio equipment. Others design their own aircraft using computer aided design (CAD) and construct the aircraft using foam, fiberglass, kevlar, and other exotic materials as well as balsa and spruce. Club membership is open to anyone interested in building and flying sailplanes or other silent aircraft. To fly on our field you must have a membership in the Academy of Model Aeronautics (AMA) whose membership includes liability insurance. Prospective new members who do not have an AMA membership may fly on our field 3 times with a club member. No matter what your level of interest or skill, LIFT members get the greatest enjoyment out of the camaraderie shared by all members.
